Without the CAD software one couldn’t draft, and unless the hobbyist had saved a great deal of money, there was no way they were ever going to be able to afford even the cheapest of programs. This dilemma was what led to the open source software revolution in the first place and due to similar causes it’s no surprise that open source quickly to a shining to this specific platform in the software industry and an open source CAD project was soon born. Due to the complexity of computer aided drafting, multiple projects were created in order to create a universal solution to the problem. With only one open source cad project in development, there would still be plenty of different situations in which it would not be applicable and because of this the end user would be once again forced to purchase the expensive alternative. As one open source cad project grew, more were born and soon there was an entire market full of them.

Often times very few people have the money to purchase a retail copy of the software and because of this are either forced to obtain an illegal copy or they simply can’t pursue their passion of drafting. Open source CAD software gives an alternative to those who can’t or simply won’t use commercial products. There are even numerous corporations that use open source CAD software in their every day operations, which should be a testament to their quality.
