What Can Linux CAD CAM Do?
Often times when we think of drafting we think of architecture and people building large structures, but this isn’t always the case. In fact a lot of the smallest most insignificant things in our every day lives are drafted and constructed on the computer before we ever even hear about them. These small items and every other item that is drafted before being produced is part of CAM or computer aided manufacturing. Much like CAD which helps engineers and architects draft buildings before constructing, CAM helps manufacturers and mechanical engineers draft up anything from toys to motors before they are put into production. Even the small toys that can be found at fast food joints are often times drafted and modeled in some sort of CAM software before they were cast and mass produced. In a particularly focused area, Linux CAD and Linux CAM have created opportunities for businesses and hobbyists alike.
Linux CAD and Linux CAM is an area of interest for a lot of different firms and hobbyists. Often times these large corporations run something other than Windows for their platform of choice and because of this are excluded from running the most popular build of CAD and CAM software, which is AutoCAD. While it is possible for many companies to simply switch over to a Windows based solution and just run the most popular CAD and CAM packages, there are a lot of reasons they won’t. The first being running Linux is free and inexpensive. The cost for constructing a Windows network is incredibly expensive, even for the large corporations. The second reason why many corporations stick with their Linux builds is because of security. When a company is relied upon to not only draft up cutting edge buildings and technologies, they are relied upon to draft other people’s products to. It’s of the utmost importance to keep both parties information secure and doing this with Windows is much harder than Linux. Both of these reasons are the driving factors for people to participate in the Linux CAD and Linux CAM fields.
Linux CAD and Linux CAM have done much more than simply produce an alternative to the most popular and often time’s monopolistic drafting programs, they have also provided an alternative to running the Windows operating system. With the advent of Linux CAD and Linux CAM solutions the desire for an open source CAD and CAM solution has become greater. The field which had originally produced a simple alternative to two large corporations had now sparked a completely free product with the creation of open source drafting software. Without the adoption of Linux CAD and Linux CAM there would be no open source CAD software and because of this the drafting world has been opened up more than ever and those who cannot afford the multi-hundred dollar software suites can now actively participate in drafting.
Linux CAD and Linux CAM are often under appreciated. Some people try to turn the whole situation into a silly debate about what operating system is better. While it can certainly be looked upon that way since the operating system was the driving force for carving out this niche it certainly isn’t the only way to look at it. It’s most important to look at this whole field from the standpoint of what Linux CAD and Linux CAM have spurred. From a great alternative for different platforms to open source software, the movement as a whole has been an incredible and beneficial movement for all.
