Good Home CAD Software
Drafting has always been a heavily industrial and professional sector. There has been a niche interest in it from the public but not nearly as much as the music industry or even auto industry. Because of this most everything produced in the past regarding drafting and CAD software has been aimed almost exclusively at businesses and professionals. These are people and organizations with a lot of money to pay for both the tools and the training and because of this the hobbyists lose out. With extravagant prices and complex interfaces it wasn’t until just recently that home CAD software has been available. But what exactly is good home CAD software and how can one choose out of the dozens available?
The first thing to look at and the number one variable that has kept home CAD software off the market was price. Often times CAD software costs hundreds if not thousands of dollars. This makes it hard for anyone except for the most hardcore enthusiast to afford it. That no longer is the case though and there are a couple different options for home CAD software. The most popular option is AutoCAD which is the industry standard. With a high price tag of nearly four thousand dollars it is hard to think of it as home CAD software, but there is a catch. There is a student version that is a little over one-hundred dollars that is easy to get your hands on. If you’re an adult there is also a scaled down version which rings up at just under a thousand dollars. If this isn’t an option there are a handful of less powerful drafting solutions but if price is an issue the overwhelmingly best option is open source. It’s free and just as powerful as the big name options and supports most of the data formats out there.
Good home CAD software has a lot more to it than just price however. In order to have a good home CAD software solution, it needs to be able to interact with all the big name solutions at work or at school. If you ever take a class at any sort of institution they will most likely use AutoCAD and thusly your home CAD software will need to read its native file format DWG. If your home CAD software can’t read standard formats and export to them, it’s not really worthwhile and is only really good for light hobbyist use. Along with standards it needs to come with a strong community and good documentation. Home CAD software is usually used by those who aren’t yet professionals and because of this they have a lot of questions. If your software is so esoteric that you can’t even create a simple floor plan without needing help there is a problem. Without a good community and documentation you’ll never have anyone to turn to when you get stuck and in all likely-hood you will lose interest in drafting quickly.
There is an art to finding good home CAD software and there is a big stake in it too. Without selecting the right home CAD software your drafting career will be doomed from the start. Bad home CAD software can cause headaches on a daily basis and can turn your love for the art of drafting into hatred. All too often people who are eager to sit down and draft rush out and buy the first product they see and this is possible the worst thing one can do. If you spend time looking for the right product and are careful you’ll not only have a great product but a great experience.
