What Can Automotive CAD Software Do?

While we often times envision architects drafting long hours into the night on their computers we don’t always have the same vision for automotive engineers, even though they do roughly the same job. Much like an architect design and constructs a building on the computer first to see not only what it will look like but how it will react to natural forces, the same goes for an automotive engineer. They will design, edit and test an automobile long before any physical prototype is produced and it’s the automotive CAD software they use that makes the industry as fast and reliable as it is. Automotive CAD software has made the auto industry advanced in leaps and bounds.

The first step is to design the car. Often times this is done in a pencil sketch but quickly moved into a wire-frame or basic outline into some sort of automotive CAD software. Unlike other non-specialized CAD software, automotive CAD software has a set of specialized tools that aid in the development of cars. Once the basic modeling is done it is time to texture the car and get a realistic view of what it will look like. This is often done with preset textures that are installed with the automotive CAD software but it is possible to make custom textures and load them in. Things such as glass and different metals and paints are applied to the various surfaces and with that the final car is complete. It goes in for review and all the structural edits are made in the automotive CAD software, unlike in the past where any edits must be made to a prototype which can cost thousands of dollars and a lot of time. The initial building and design process has received a huge amount of aid both in terms of budget, time and convenience from automotive CAD software.

Simply designing and building the car isn’t all automotive CAD software can do. A large and somewhat new aspect is the simulations that it can run. With proper inputs of what metal is where and the various dimensions mathematical formulas can be created to produce a whole slew of different simulations. The most common are safety and efficiency. They can run the car through various virtual crash tests and using physics they can compute how the car will break down and how safe it is for the driver. This can be incredibly helpful because no longer do physical and expensive cars have to be crashed in real life to obtain this safety data. They also put the car through various efficiency simulations to test for gas mileage and aerodynamics. Automotive CAD software has aided the testing of a car just as much if not more than the design of it.

As you can see the automotive industry has gone high tech. Not only are the means in which they produce the cars in their factories incredibly complex but the automotive CAD software they use to design it is too. Slowly the architect, the engineer and the car designer all merge into one being. No longer can a love of cars and a good eye get you into the industry. Now and days you have to be good with computers and automotive CAD software. As technology advances the reliance on automotive CAD software and computers as a whole will increase.
